A little history about your Proton car…

Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Berhad, or simply known as Proton, was established in 1983 under the supervision of Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Mahathir desired to create a national car manufacturer for Malaysia. He furnished the company with land, infrastructure, funding and advantageous policies through heavy tariffs to protect the infant motor industry. Nonetheless, Malaysia was not equipped with the necessary technology and expertise to accomplish the dream. Consequently, they sought help from Mitsubishi Motors of Japan to build the factory, supply production equipment, and train people resulting to the production of Proton cars which ostensibly appeared as clones of Mitsubishi Lancer, Colt, and other Mitsubishi vehicles. As an incentive, Mitsubishi received minority shares in Proton and profited from the supply of engines and transmissions.

As the first Malaysian national automaker, Proton had been protected by large tariffs from the start. Today, with decreased government protection and stiff competition with foreign investors, Proton has been overtaken by Perodua as the leader in domestic sales.
