A little history about your Daewoo car…

Daewoo Group was founded in 1967 by Kim Woo Choong. The emergence of Daewoo was very closely associated with the rapid transformation of South Korea from an agrarian country into a successful nation through the centrally planned “economic miracle.”

Daewoo is a term which essentially means “Great Universe,” and albeit the company’s initial share capital was a mere $18,000, Kim and his friends strived to develop the business turning it into South Korea’s fourth largest conglomerate. Daewoo operates in various fields including motor vehicles, aerospace, trading, shipbuilding, consumer electronics, financial services, and telecommunications.

Having 25 subsidiaries which are linked together in a complex cross holdings system, Daewoo Corporation was the major company in the group. In 1975, it was licensed by the Korean government as a general trading company (GTC). GTCs promoted exports and established offices in various foreign countries. Having more than 100 branches across the globe, Daewoo had about 3,500 different products traded in more than 130 countries. However, Kim Woo Choong’s ambitious ventures overextended Daewoo’s resources making it sink into a huge debt in the 90s. Daewoo was formally dismantled by the South Korean Government in 1999 and the majority of the group’s holdings were bought by other corporations.
